Financial Aid

Financial Aid

One of the most important steps in making college more affordable is applying for financial aid—money that helps you pay for college or trade school. Financial aid can come in the form of grants, scholarships, work-study, or loans, and may be based on financial need, academic achievement, or other factors.

These types of financial aid can be accessed through the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and/or CSS Profile.

At cafécollege, we offer free, personalized support to assist you with financial aid applications.

What is the FAFSA?

The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)

The FAFSA is the official application for federal financial aid, providing access to crucial funding for higher education. Through the FAFSA, you can apply for the following types of federal student aid:

  • Pell Grants are need-based federal grants that do not need to be repaid. They help cover tuition, fees, books, and other expenses. The amount varies based on your financial need and enrollment status.
  • Federal Work-Study offers need-based part-time jobs, on or off campus, to help with education costs. These jobs are flexible around your class schedule and may be related to your field of study. Earnings are paid directly to you and can be used for tuition, books, and other expenses.
  • Federal Student Loans offer lower interest rates and flexible repayment plans. There are two main types of loans available:
    • Subsidized Loans are need-based loans where the government pays the interest while you are in school.

    • Unsubsidized Loans are available to all students, but interest begins accruing while you are in school.

    • Some federal loans may also offer loan forgiveness programs for qualifying public service workers.

Through the FAFSA, eligibility for state aid is also determined.

  • Texas Grants are need-based state funds that help cover tuition and fees. They do not need to be repaid, making them a valuable source of financial aid. The amount awarded varies depending on your financial need and enrollment status.

Who Is Eligible to Complete the FAFSA?

  • U.S. citizens or eligible non-citizens, such as legal permanent residents, who are planning to or are enrolled in an eligible degree or certificate program at an eligible college or career/trade school.

Important Dates

  • The FAFSA opens every fall. Be sure to apply as early as possible.
  • The Texas priority deadline is February 15 each year.
  • Apply early to maximize your financial aid. Many grants and scholarships are limited and awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Submitting your FAFSA before the priority deadline improves your chances of receiving aid.

What Is an FSA ID?

Your Federal Student Aid ID (FSA ID) is a username and password that allows you to access, complete, and electronically sign your FAFSA. If you are a dependent student, one of your parents will also need to create their own FSA ID. Be sure to create it ahead of time at studentaid.gov to avoid delays.

Pro Tip:

FAFSA can use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to auto-fill tax information and reduce errors.

What is the CSS Profile?

The CSS Profile (College Scholarship Service Profile)

The CSS Profile is an additional financial aid application required by many private and out-of-state colleges and universities to determine your eligibility for institutional (school-based) aid. It is separate from the FAFSA and is administered by the College Board.

Through the CSS Profile, you may qualify for the following:

  • Institutional Grants and Scholarships are forms of free money offered directly by the college. These funds may not be available through FAFSA or TASFA.
  • Additional Need-Based Assistance may be awarded by some schools that use the CSS Profile to gain a more detailed understanding of your financial circumstances.

Who Is Eligible to Complete the CSS Profile?

  • Students applying to colleges that require the CSS Profile, which are usually private or highly selective institutions. Check each the college’s financial aid website to confirm requirements.

Important Dates

  • The CSS Profile opens every fall. Deadlines vary by school and often align with admission deadlines, so it is important to check early.

Key Facts About the CSS Profile

What You’ll Need:

  • Your most recent tax returns.
  • Your W-2 forms and other income information.
  • Details on assets, savings, and family financial circumstances.
  • Noncustodial parent information (if applicable).

Cost:

  • There is a fee to submit the CSS Profile to each school, though fee waivers are available for eligible students.

Important Note:

The CSS Profile is in addition to, not a replacement for, the FAFSA. If required, you must complete both applications to be considered for all possible aid.
