Transferring
Your Guide to Changing Schools
Thinking about transferring from one institution to another? Whether you’re currently attending a community college, technical school, or another university, transferring can be a smart way to save money, explore new opportunities, and stay on track to meet your academic and career goals.
At cafécollege, our advisors are here to support you through each step of the process.
Steps in the Transfer Process
1. Research Transfer-Friendly Schools
Identify universities that accept transfer students, offer your intended major, and are a good fit for your academic and personal goals. Check articulation agreements between schools to ensure the transfer process is smooth.
2. Meet with an Academic Advisor
An advisor can help you select courses that align with your transfer plans and ensure you’re meeting requirements for both your current and future institution.
3. Understand Transfer Requirements
Each college has different admission criteria. Review GPA requirements, application deadlines, necessary forms, and whether recommendation letters or essays are needed.

4. Apply to Your Target Schools
Use ApplyTexas or the individual college’s application system. Be sure to start early and stay organized.
5. Send Official Transcripts
You’ll need to request official transcripts from all colleges you’ve previously attended. Some schools may also ask for your high school transcript.
6. Update Your FAFSA
Add your transfer school to your FAFSA application and explore any transfer-specific scholarships or aid packages.
7. Monitor Credit Transfers
Not all credits transfer equally. Use tools like the Texas Common Course Numbering System (TCCNS) to see how your completed coursework applies at your new school.
8. Register and Prepare
Once accepted, complete your new student orientation, meet with your new advisor, and register for classes. You’re officially a transfer student!
